Frequently Asked Questions

What programs do you offer?

I offer a variety of personalized coaching programs tailored to your needs and goals. The standard program is a one hour-long session every week for 12 weeks, with the option to extend the program after that. However, I also offer an accountability program—which is one session every other week for 12 weeks—if you want fewer check-ins, but still need support.

How do we get together?

It’s up to you! Most of my clients prefer the ease and convenience of phone calls, but we can also talk over FaceTime or meet in person if you’re local to North San Diego, CA.

Why do phone calls work well?

Much of the work we do together is deep, and you need to feel comfortable and vulnerable enough to share what’s on your heart. Talking over the phone—in your own space—can help you open up more easily than you would in other settings.

What’s your coaching style?

Our coaching sessions are always a dialogue. I’m here to listen with empathy and openness, ask questions, and offer thoughtful, personalized feedback. Nothing you say can surprise me or scare me, and there are no wrong answers ever. My goal is always to meet you exactly where you are.

How is your coaching different from therapy?

Both coaching and therapy focus on self-awareness and healing, but the approaches are different. Therapy deals primarily with investigating past traumas to manage mental health issues, while coaching focuses on tapping into your present self and potential to set goals and create change. Both therapy and coaching are valuable tools—it just depends on what you’re looking for!

Though I am a Certified Health and Life Coach, I’m not a licensed therapist or clinical psychologist, which means I’m not qualified to diagnose you, prescribe medication, or offer treatment plans. If there’s ever a situation where I don’t think I can adequately address your needs, I’ll refer you to a medical professional who can.

Where were you trained?

I received my certification as a Health and Life Coach through The Health Coach Institute, a CCE-accredited program. Through the program I studied advanced nutrition, habit change coaching, transformational coaching, and personal development on everything from career and finance to relationships and spirituality.

Are you available outside of our sessions?

Yes! I’m available via email Monday through Friday, and you can always expect a response within 24 hours. You can also text me with questions and updates on your progress throughout the week. I love to celebrate your wins, both big and small!

How do you charge clients?

I request payment via PayPal. You can either do a one-time payment or we can set up a payment plan.

How can I get started?

Send me an email at ShelbyTheHealthCoach@gmail.com! I’ll send you a general intake form where you can tell me more about what’s going on and what you’re looking for. From there, we’ll schedule a complimentary one-hour phone consultation to chat and get to know each other. If we both decide we’re the right fit, we’ll start scheduling our sessions and get to work!
